Highway Idiots 1 Common Sense 0

I drove to our nation's capital on the weekend, the last trip of many previous to son Peter's apartment, this time to pick up the remainder of his stuff for its return home.
Anybody want to buy a few rats?
Behind the wheel of a teeth-chattering Ryder truck, I viewed the road ahead from a unique perspective. Well, guess what? There's nothing wrong with Hwy. 7. Absolutely nothing. Its lanes are wide and, for the most part, well maintained. Most of the intersections have turn lanes and the highway is well signed. If that's not all enough, the sight lines are excellent.
But that stretch of highway, that Bermuda Triangle, if you will, continues to strike fear in the hearts of drivers familiar with the carnage it has been home to for so long now. Not a month goes by when we don't hear of some catastrophic event on Hwy. 7. All too often those reports end with funeral visitation details. Inevitably, in the aftermath of each, comes calls for improvements to the highway.
Why isn't anyone calling for an end to idiotic driving? Is it because we're all guilty? Is it because it's easier to improve a road than correct long-entrenched bad habits?
Is it because in our zeal to understand how such tragedies could happen, we fall back on a familiar position -- blame the government ministry responsible.
I am oh so tired of hearing there are problems with Hwy. 7 and other Ontario roadways. Reckless drivers are the enemy, not the pavement on which they practise their idiocy. It's only a matter of time before someone passes you in the Tim Horton's drive-thru,
Would you tolerate someone coming into your home and playing Russian roulette with your family? Of course not. In no way is this any different.

On Sunday we took Highway 7 west out to Lindsay and then down to Little
Britain to Port Hoover for a family event.
After turning onto Hwy 7 from Parkhill, I set the cruise control on 88km and
suddenly had a load of cars all tailgating.
Now I always set the cruise at 88km as the cops are looking for cars doing
10 over. Given speedometer error, I am likely only doing 85km corrected.
No sooner had the train of cars gone by me west of Fowler's Corners than I
collected another tailgater and more cars. All the way to Omemee.
Fortunately, on the westside of Omemee, I had to pass a very slow car (it
was still doing 60k) and then reset the cruise.
All the way to Lindsay, with cruise on, I was tailgated.
All the way to Little Britain, I was tailgated.
Do you think I should have the speedo checked at McGee's ?
Why do we have speed signs ? Nobody is doing the speed limit, not even the cops who are supposed to be enforcing the speed. I got passed by an unmarked cop car on the way home from Little Britain and I was on cruise at 88km.
We could save a lot of money by not posting speed signs.
